Building Trust and Breaking Barriers to Health Equity in Communities of Color

Nykia Julien

In 2018, Nykia Julien’s heart was beginning to fail. Eventually, doctors told her she would not have much longer to live without a new heart.

Versiti Organ and Tissue is excited to host its inaugural Impact Summit, which aims to provide further education and engagement for hospital partners and staff who engage with organ and tissue donor families.

Summit Objectives

  • Equip healthcare team members and organ procurement staff involved in organ, tissue and eye donation with the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to increase authorization, particularly within African American and Hispanic communities
  • Enhance empathy, understanding and appreciation among attendees for the perspectives and experiences of donor families and patients from diverse communities
  • Inspire and motivate attendees to apply insights and ideas immediately to drive positive change
  • Strengthen collaboration between Versiti Organ and Tissue and hospital partners to achieve shared goals and increase authorization among communities of color

Impact Summit is partially funded by a grant provided by Donate Life Wisconsin.
