MRMC Hematology Biorepository

This biorepository will serve as a Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus-wide shared resource and a powerful tool for advancing collaboration and interdisciplinary research.

MRMC Hematology Biorepository

A Hematology biorepository, serves as a centralized shared facility that systematically collects, stores and manages biospecimens and associated data. With its potential to unlock a wealth of information, a biorepository represents a crucial investment in the future of healthcare and promises to transform our understanding and treatment of disease.

Types of Biospecimens

MRMC-HBR biorepository will provide researchers with access to diverse, well-characterized biological samples. Samples are collected using an institutional review board (IRB) approved informed consent process. Types of samples collected include but are not limited to:

  • Blood
  • Bone marrow
  • Cells
  • Hair and Nail
  • Serum and Plasma
  • DNA and RNA
  • Urine and Stool
  • Tissue Biopsies

This well-curated biorepository will enable researchers at Versiti Blood Research Institute, Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin to develop broader knowledge of diseases like cancer and hemophilia, predict treatment responses and design targeted therapies.

Privacy and Security

Biorepositories are governed by strict ethical and legal frameworks to ensure the privacy, confidentiality and informed consent of donors. These frameworks aim to protect the rights and welfare of individuals who donate their samples per the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

A biospecimen information management system will provide an additional layer of robust data security measures to safeguard sensitive participant information and ensure compliance with strict data protection regulations. It allows for user access controls, encryption and audit trails to protect the confidentiality and privacy of stored data.
