Unleashing the Power of Data and Information in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine

  • Lynne Briggs, MBA, Vice President and CIO; Versiti, Milwaukee, WI
  • Justin Juskewitch MD, PhD; Division of Transfusion Medicine; Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Date: Tuesday, April 16th 1pm CST

Big data fuels many of the business activities and much of the decision making across numerous industries. Blood banking and transfusion medicine are no different, with massive amounts of valuable data being collected about donors, blood donations, product manufacturing, distribution/supply chains, and transfusion administration. All of this data, though, is captured and stored in transactional information systems like the Blood Establishment Computer System (BECS) hampering its use to drive discovery or process improvements. In this session, we will discuss approaches to how we can unleash data from transactional systems and explore a novel solution created when we can more readily access data and information.

Lectures & Seminars

Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) lectures are integral to the SBB program, providing theoretical information on transfusion medicine. These lectures are intended for medical professionals seeking to gain in-depth knowledge on transfusion-related topics. Speakers with professional experience and expertise address topics including anemia, red cell genotyping and antigen systems, blood donor qualification, and storage of blood components.

Versiti subscribes to a variety of audio conferences/webinars.

Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) sponsors several seminar series and lectures throughout the year. We bring together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and investigators to hear presentations by world-renowned scientists whose work is relevant to research at VBRI. Topics include:

We also host:

  • A Versiti Medical Sciences Institute-sponsored seminar series that addresses clinical topics in hematology and hematologic disorders.
  • The Mosesson Lecture on Thrombosis, established by Michael W. Mosesson, MD, brings an outstanding researcher in thrombosis medicine to VBRI every year.
  • The Aster Lecture, presented annually, brings a prominent researcher in the field of platelet biology to VBRI. This lecture is presented in honor of Richard H. Aster, MD, VBRI senior investigator emeritus.

Versiti offers day-long “wet workshops” organized and presented by Versiti’s Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) Program, Clinical Education and Immunohematology Reference Laboratories. These workshops provide training in new skills and problem-resolution techniques for medical laboratory scientists working in hospital blood banks and transfusion services. Versiti offers these workshops every Fall and Spring. More information can be found on beLearning.
