Women Rocking Research Program Delivers Inspiration and Education at VBRI

Milwaukee — April 25, 2025
Karin Hoffmeister, MD, Nan Gardetto and Agata Steenackers, PhD.

The Versiti Blood Research Institute welcomed a cohort of donors, supporters, community members, and employees to the third-annual Women Rocking Research event on Wednesday, April 23.

Attendees were treated to a live scientific demonstration, VBRI tours, and two inspiring presentations from Drs. Karin Hoffmeister and Agata Steenackers. Both investigators profiled their work in translational glycobiology research for autoimmune diseases and leukemia before fielding questions from the audience.

Opening remarks from CEO Chris Miskel highlighted VBRI's rich history and bright future, and featured a promising update on the ongoing construction as Versiti expands its footprint on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center in Wauwatosa.

The $79 million expansion, expected to be completed by the end of 2026, will add 100 jobs and double VBRI's research capacity. The construction of a bridge between the VBRI and the Medical College of Wisconsin will establish a physical connection between the buildings and deepen Versiti's philosophical connection to its neighbors and partners in the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center.

Women Rocking Research is a unique annual program thoughtfully designed to engage and empower women and girls of all ages. The event gives science enthusiasts from all walks of life an opportunity to celebrate the power and promise of discovery.

The interactive format of the event allowed participants to engage directly with leading female scientists and gain insight into research happening in Milwaukee. Dr. Hoffmeister's presentation showcased how VBRI researchers are developing diagnostic tests to improve treatment options for children with autoimmune disorders, particularly primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).

Dr. Steenackers discussed her team's progress in understanding how glycans mask cancer cells, which could increase the effectiveness of precision leukemia therapies. Both VBRI investigators highlighted the real-world impact of VBRI's research on patient care.

The VBRI and Versiti thank Nan Gardetto, our friend and supporter, for hosting this exceptional event that continues to inspire the next generation of scientists while strengthening the community bonds that fuel Versiti’s mission.
