Wisconsin donor celebrates more than six years of life-saving platelet donations

Milwaukee — May 07, 2025

For more than six years, John Norman has been making a profound impact on his community through the simple act of donating blood. His journey began when he signed up at a workplace blood drive, unaware of the deep personal significance it would come to hold.

Shortly after his initial donation, Norman received a call from Versiti — a leading blood health organization — informing him that he was an ideal candidate to donate platelets. Intrigued by the process, he recalls, “I decided to go in and donate; I thought it was really cool how the machine took the platelets out and put everything else back in.”

What truly transformed his perspective was learning that a coworker and close friend had survived childhood leukemia, thanks in part to platelet donations. “All of a sudden, I could put a face to the reason I donated,” Norman said.

Since then, Norman has connected with many individuals whose lives have been touched by platelet donations. With their permission, he shares their stories on his social media platforms and dedicates each donation to someone special in his life. “Initially, it was a reason to focus on something other than myself,” he explained. “But over time, it’s become more than that — it’s about building relationships and making a difference.”

Having donated platelets 129 times and counting, Norman encourages others to consider joining him. “I can point to at least 10 people who have decided to donate just from hearing other people’s stories,” he said. “It’s never too late to start.”

The message is clear: People need people. Donating blood is a powerful way to make a difference in someone’s life. Patients in local communities rely on the generosity of Versiti’s blood donors, especially for life-saving platelet transfusions.

If you’re new to blood donation, remember that it’s quick, easy, and relatively painless. It’s a meaningful way to give back and help those in need. Consider scheduling an appointment today and becoming part of a community dedicated to saving lives.
