Versiti Steps Up: Helping Protect the Nation's Blood Supply After Hurricane Helene

Milwaukee — October 03, 2024

When Hurricane Helene struck the Southern U.S., its devastating impact extended beyond the communities in its path; the destruction also threatened the nation's blood supply. In times like these, blood donations to providers like Versiti are needed more than ever.

Boosting Local Efforts to Help National Needs

Even though the hurricane hasn’t directly impacted the hospitals Versiti serves, the storm’s ripple effects are felt across the country. Blood centers serving affected areas were forced to close, canceling hundreds of blood drives and leaving hospitals facing shortages. With roads blocked and blood collection hindered, ensuring a steady supply of blood is challenging when it’s needed most.

That's where Versiti steps in. We play a critical role in ensuring the nation's blood supply remains strong. Through our partnership with Blood Centers of America (BCA), we support national calls for help during emergencies like Hurricane Helene. BCA's 60-plus independent community blood centers collect and distribute more than 50% of the nation's blood supply. Locally and nationally, BCA members are committed to mobilizing during rapid-response crises.

“Our goal is to always be ready to step up when there’s a need,” says Brian Bautista, chief operating officer at Versiti. “Right now, that means doing everything possible to ensure blood is available for hospitals affected by Hurricane Helene. When disaster strikes, we roll up our sleeves and go beyond our borders to help.”

How Versiti Is Helping

When blood shortages occur in one region, it’s essential for other areas to fill the gap. That’s why Versiti is ramping up efforts at home to assist those affected by the hurricane. By encouraging local donors to give, we can share our supplies with hospitals in impacted areas.

“People may not realize how much their donation in Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, or Ohio can help someone hundreds of miles away,” explains Dr. Matthew Anderson, chief medical officer. “It’s important to remember that blood has a short shelf life, and the need is constant—especially during emergencies like this.”

To ensure we’re ready to help as much as possible, Versiti is organizing extra blood drives, urging more platelet and plasma donations, and spreading the word about the national need for blood. Every donation counts, and your contribution could make a difference for someone in a hurricane-affected area.
