Versiti, a national leader in blood health innovation, is excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization’s diagnostic laboratories. Established in 1973, the Platelet Immunology Laboratory at Versiti was founded to provide physicians with diagnostic testing to improve patient care.
For 50 years, Versiti has led the way in testing innovations across the spectrum of blood health. From improving platelet typing in the 1970s to facilitating the first successful bone marrow transplant for aplastic anemia in 1981 and identifying new forms of von Willebrand disease through the 1990s, Versiti continues to be at the forefront in the fields of transfusion medicine, hematology, transplantation, and oncology.
“Our goal is to provide better patient outcomes for the communities we serve, and we are thrilled to celebrate 50 years of innovation,” said Brad Pietz, EVP and chief laboratory officer for Versiti. “As we look ahead to the next 50 YEARS, our commitment to improved patient care remains resolute, and we look forward to continuing to pioneer laboratory solutions for diagnosis, prognosis and more highly informed patient treatment.”
What started as a lab staffed by a single employee is now supported by more than 240 lab staff. Versiti’s current test menu features more than 300 diverse esoteric tests across hematology, transplantation, oncology and transfusion medicine, with the organization averaging 15,000 tests per month in 2023.
In celebration of the anniversary, Versiti will highlight the milestones of the diagnostic labs' journey at several upcoming events and trade shows, including the ASPHO Conference in Fort Worth (May 10-13), the PLUGS Summit (June 15-16), and the SOHO Annual Meeting (September 6-9).
