A Brother's Gift. A Second Chance.

A bone marrow transplant offered hope. Research and blood donors made that hope possible.

For most of his life, Semi knew what it meant to live with sickle cell disease.

Hospital stays became routine. Blood transfusions helped him through countless medical crises. Too often, illness interrupted school, family time and the ordinary moments of childhood.

Then his doctors offered hope: a bone marrow transplant. There was just one question: Would anyone in his family be a match?

His older brother, Temi, didn't hesitate to be tested. He was a perfect match.

The transplant was successful, and Semi began the difficult journey toward recovery. Then, without warning, everything changed.

As Semi recovered, his platelet count dropped to dangerously low levels. A Code Blue was called. He was rushed to the intensive care unit. After everything they had been through, his family feared they were losing him.

Like most bone marrow transplant patients, Semi depended on platelet transfusions while his new marrow began producing healthy blood cells. But every transfusion his doctors gave him was destroyed before it could help.

Nothing was working. No one knew why.

When traditional treatment wasn't enough, researchers at the Versiti Blood Research Institute partnered with Semi's transplant team to search for answers.

Using specialized testing, they discovered something extraordinarily rare. Semi was missing a platelet protein found in nearly everyone else. His immune system recognized donated platelets as foreign and destroyed them before they could help.

At last, the team understood what was happening. The answer wasn't just any platelet donation. Semi needed specially matched platelets, and Temi was uniquely able to provide them.

For months, Temi returned to donate the specially matched platelets that only he could give. Each donation gave Semi's body another chance to heal.

Today, the brothers are best friends with an unbreakable bond. Semi hopes to become a hematologist, caring for patients with blood disorders like his own. Temi is studying radiology and hopes to work in pediatric medicine, helping children the way his brother was helped.

Their story is one of brotherhood. But it is also a story of what becomes possible when blood donors, researchers and compassionate care come together.
