Carry His Light Forward

For more than six decades, Richard “Dick” Aster, MD, helped shape the field of blood medicine and the lives of those who would carry it forward.

A pioneering physician-scientist, Dr. Aster helped transform the understanding and diagnosis of complex immune disorders affecting blood cells, particularly platelets. His discoveries influenced patient care around the world and helped establish scientific foundations that continue to guide hematology and transfusion medicine today.

His work earned recognition across the field. Yet for all he accomplished, those who knew Dr. Aster best remember the person behind the science: his curiosity, humility and deep commitment to helping others learn, grow and succeed.

Dr. Aster came to Milwaukee in 1970 to lead the Milwaukee Blood Center, now Versiti. His research, leadership and vision helped build the foundation for today’s Versiti Blood Research Institute and a culture of discovery that continues to grow.

Now, we have an opportunity to honor that legacy in a place dedicated to the discoveries still ahead.

At the heart of the expanded Versiti Blood Research Institute, natural light will pour through a soaring lightwell and across the research spaces below.Here, scientists will cross paths. Ideas will be exchanged. Young investigators will learn from experienced mentors. Questions will lead to new questions. And discoveries with the potential to improve patients’ lives will take shape.
