Granulocyte Donation: How You May Be Able to Help
What Is a Granulocyte Donation?
Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell that help the body fight serious infection.
Some patients — especially those undergoing cancer treatment, bone marrow transplants, or living with severely weakened immune systems — can’t produce enough of these cells on their own.
Neutrophils — the most abundant type of granulocyte — are especially important for fighting bacterial and fungal infections.
When infections become life-threatening and other treatments aren’t working, doctors may request granulocyte transfusions to help their body fight back.
These donations are rare, highly coordinated, and often time-sensitive.
Why This Matters
For patients in critical condition — often while undergoing cancer treatment — timing matters. Granulocyte transfusions must be given quickly, often within hours of collection.
In some situations, patients may need multiple donations over a short period of time, requiring several donors on short notice.
Having a group of ready, eligible donors can make all the difference.
How the Rapid Response Donor Network Works
This is not a typical donation program. When you join the Rapid Response Donor Network, you’re letting us know you’re open to being contacted if a patient need arises.
You express interest by calling Versiti Special Patient Services (414-937-6101).
If a patient need arises, we contact you.
You decide if you’re available — there is no obligation.
The donation is coordinated quickly.

Why You Might Be Here
You may be learning about granulocyte donation because someone you know is facing a serious infection, or because you were asked to consider helping. In some cases, friends, family members, and community members are invited to learn more when a patient need is urgent.
Whether you're here for a specific situation or simply want to help, our team is here to guide you.
What to Expect as a Donor
Granulocyte donation is different from giving whole blood or platelets.
Longer appointment time than a standard donation
Requires two consecutive visits:
1st visit is about one hour and includes donor evaluation, sample tubes, and medication administration
2nd visit is the donation, which lasts about 3-4 hours
Specialized care and support from trained staff
May involve additional screening and, in some cases, medication to temporarily increase white blood cell counts before donation
Donations are only scheduled when medically necessary
In most cases, you can continue your regular blood or platelet donations as usual, depending on timing and eligibility.
Who This Is For
Because of the specific nature of granulocyte donation, not all donors will qualify.
Not everyone will qualify — and that’s okay. Our team will help determine eligibility and answer any questions.
Be Part of the Response
Most people will never be asked to give in this way. But for the patients who need it, donors like you can be part of what helps them keep fighting.
