Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Whether you’re supporting a loved one who’s currently battling cancer, honoring a friend or family member who has overcome cancer, or remembering someone you’ve lost to the disease, donating blood and platelets is a powerful way to fight back and make an impact right here in our community.

Every day, blood transfusions and platelet transfusions help our local cancer warriors battle leukemia and other cancers. Oftentimes, these essential blood products help patients regain and maintain strength during their chemotherapy and radiation treatments and replace any blood that was lost during surgery.

Additionally, when you give the vital gift of blood and platelets, you provide much-needed hope and healing to local families in crisis. Your generous blood donation or platelet donation could be the lifeline someone is waiting for.

Platelets are especially powerful - and needed.

Donating platelets is an especially powerful way to make an impact for cancer patients, and just a few hours of your time can make a lifetime of difference for families.

Because chemotherapy treatments and/or certain blood cancers (like leukemia) can cause low platelet counts, platelet transfusions are often needed for a patient to return to health. Further, because donated platelets only live 5-7 days outside the body, there’s always a need for new platelet donors.

According to the Association for Blood Donor Professionals (ADRP):

  • 8 platelet units per week can be used by a patient undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
  • 46% of platelet transfusion recipients have a type of cancer that affects the blood, bone marrow, and/or lymph nodes. This includes various types of leukemia (acute lymphocytic (ALL), chronic lymphocytic (CLL), acute myeloid (AML), chronic myeloid (CML)), myeloma, and lymphoma (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's (NHL)).

Patrick Maxwell

Over the course of his treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), Patrick Maxwell received approximately 40 units of red blood cells and 30 units of platelets to boost his strength and him fight the cancer. “The blood products absolutely saved his life,” says his mother, Sarah. “Without the platelets and red blood cells, that would’ve been it for him.”

John Norman

Platelet donation really hit home for John Norman when he learned that a coworker and friend survived childhood leukemia thanks, in part, to donated platelets. “All of a sudden, I could put a face to the reason I donated,” he says.
