Carlos H. Villa, MD, PhD joined Versiti in January 2026 and is a Clinician Investigator in the Translational Hematology program at the Versiti Blood Research Institute. He is board-certified in Clinical Pathology and Transfusion Medicine, and his clinical work includes Transfusion Medicine, Apheresis, and specialized diagnostics at Versiti Diagnostic Labs. His research work focuses on the translation of new technologies and diagnostics in Transfusion Medicine to their clinical application.
Before joining Versiti, he worked in the Office of Blood Research and Review at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration where he led collaborative research programs while contributing to regulatory review and policy development related to blood components.
Prior areas of work included COVID-19 convalescent plasma, experimental pathogen reduction technologies, and transfusion-related products for hemorrhagic resuscitation. Before moving to the FDA, Dr. Villa was a clinical instructor at the University of Pennsylvania and conducted NIH-supported research in drug delivery systems with the Dept. of Pharmacology.
