The Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) has a legacy of advancing immunobiology and hematopoiesis, two interconnected fields essential for understanding blood cell development, leukemia, and immune cell function and dysregulation.

Early VBRI research on antibody/antigen recognition improved blood transfusion safety, led to the first allogeneic bone marrow transplant-a critical treatment for leukemia, and established the National Marrow Donor Program, benefiting patients in Milwaukee and around the world.

Today, investigators use cutting-edge technologies to study bone marrow function and leukemia, lymphocyte development, and immune deficiencies and autoimmune diseases. These efforts uncover insights into blood disorders, immune dysfunction, and hematologic malignancies, advancing innovative therapies.

VBRI remains committed to driving basic science that bridges immunology and hematopoiesis to improve treatments for blood and immune-related diseases.
