Versiti Blood Center of Indiana’s Misty Welch had always wanted a son. So, when she and her husband, Bill, were expecting a baby boy, it was a dream come true.
However, as the due date approached, their dream quickly turned into a nightmare. Baby Dalton was deprived of oxygen and was bleeding internally and had to be delivered prematurely at just 32 weeks.
While intubated, Dalton received numerous blood and platelet transfusions to stop the bleeding and replenish his body. Despite doctors’ best efforts, after 33 days, Dalton passed away.
Misty and her family were devastated. But, they found strength in the generosity of blood donors that helped make Dalton’s life possible. Misty continues to channel that strength through her commitment to her life-saving career and encouraging people to donate blood to keep Dalton’s spirit alive.
“If it weren’t for blood, we wouldn’t have been given the precious 33 days we did with Dalton,” says Misty. “Giving blood saves lives.”
People need people, make a difference in someone’s life by donating blood.
